ISO 50001

WHAT IS ISO 50001?

The international standard ISO 50001 applies to organizations of any type (public and private) and size (from small to multinational), regardless of their geographical, cultural, or social characteristics.
The standard is based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) continuous improvement methodology. The successful operation of an energy-efficient organization consists of two components: technical (equipment, technologies, and infrastructure) and managerial (effective management). The energy management system involves defining policies and objectives, developing energy indicators, and plans.
As a result of implementing innovations, energy consumption is reduced, leading to lower costs and reduced emissions of carbon and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The standard typically achieves a 5 to 10% reduction in energy consumption within the first year after ISO implementation.

Steps for implementing the ISO 50001 model

  • Assessment Visit: A preliminary diagnostic audit is conducted to determine the readiness level for certification and increase the likelihood of successful certification. EnMS requires monitoring two types of information: documents describing the system and records containing evidence of system operation.
  • Determining the Scope of EnMS: The scope can include buildings and structures, premises, workshops, factories, or their combinations.
  • Establishing a Working Group: The working group should include representatives of the organization's management, those responsible for energy consumption, representatives of the environmental department, and production units.
  • Training of Company Management and Production Units in ISO 50001 requirements and adjustment of job descriptions for responsible specialists regarding EnMS.
  • On-site Certification Audit, during which the auditor analyzes data and practices of the organization within the certification framework.
  • The auditor summarizes the audit findings, followed by the preparation of a report for the organization.
  • Registration and issuance of the certificate with a validity period of 3 years.
  • Inspection and re-certification audits: To maintain the validity of the certificate, an annual system inspection audit is conducted, and every three years, a re-certification audit is conducted for continuous monitoring of the EnMS's effectiveness.

Advantages of implementing ISO 50001:

  • Certification enhances trust among the public and investors, enhancing the company's image.
  • Cost reduction through energy consumption reduction (savings of up to 20%).
  • Better control and optimization of risks related to energy supply and use in technological processes, reducing the likelihood and consequences of accidents.
  • Provides transparency and objectivity in evaluating energy consumption efficiency.
  • Increases the competitiveness of products and services.
  • Increases the capitalization of organization assets.
  • Reduces greenhouse gas and carbon emissions.
  • Reduces energy intensity of products or services.
